Betty's Remarks from the DFL Humphrey-Mondale Dinner

Congresswoman Betty McCollum

DFL Humphrey-Mondale Dinner
In Acceptance of the Joan and Walter Mondale Award for Public Service

June 3, 2017

Thank you, Louie (Mondale), for the very kind words.

Your grandmother and grandfather have a very special place in my heart and I will treasure this recognition of my work.

Public service is about putting the needs of neighbors, our communities, and our country ahead of selfish interest or personal profit.  Joan and Walter Mondale embodied public service and selfless leadership. Their service was to our benefit as Minnesotans and Americans.

Another DFLer who epitomizes the same commitment to public service is our Governor – Mark Dayton. As a Minnesotan, I am grateful for Mark’s selflessness, his sacrifice, and his leadership for our party and our state.

For those of us who serve in elected offices, public service starts by appealing to our fellow citizens – asking them to put their trust in us.  This process, often ugly and bruising, is an election.

Obviously, for elected leaders, there is no public service unless we win elections. And, it is you, the DFL faithful, and our DFL Party, who stand with us to fight the campaign battles until the last vote is cast and the polls close on election night.  For that on-going support, I am grateful – thank you!

When DFL candidates wins, we serve the people, our communities and make lasting investments.  But, as we now know all too well, when we lose, families, students, the environment, labor unions, the vulnerable, the poor, and immigrants – all pay a price.

At a time when Donald Trump and this Republican Congress pose an existential threat to our healthcare and the environment, to U.S. leadership in the world and the most basic standard of ethical conduct, Democrats must be united and tireless in our commitment to fight for America’s future.

Friends, as we look to November 2018, we need to be focused on talking to Minnesotans, to the voters who will decide our state’s fate.

As a public servant, as a Democrat, and as a Minnesotan, I am 100% focused on two things: Doing my job in Congress and winning in 2018 – winning for our families, for our state, and for a better future!

Democrats, let us stay focused on winning so we can meet the needs of our fellow citizens build a better future for all Minnesotans.
